Jatun Cocha is a lake in the Orellana province of Ecuador. It represents the largest local lacustrine system reaching 6.000 meters of extension. An islet in the middle of the lake accentuates its beauty. Jatun Cocha is known as the large lake or the mirrored lake given its dark reflective waters which acquire this color due to a high concentration of nutrients.
This beautiful lake is within the Yasuní National Park, declared Biosphere Reserve by Unesco in 1979. Jatun Cocha is a sanctuary for innumerable rare species; caimans, exotic birds, colorful butterflies and even the Gray and Pink River Dolphin can be seen in this protected area.
Other attractions include the Garza Cocha lake, the vast jungle surrounding the water systems and the local native communities like the Waoranis which can be visited with previous authorization.
