Perhaps the most important aspect of the Ecuadorian Amazon, The Huaorani. The Huaorani or The People have called the Amazonian rainforest home for over thousands years. It is presumed that they migrated here fleeing cannibals. The Huaorani are without a doubt the most courageous indigenous group of the amazon, if not of Ecuador. It was not until the past century in 1965, that they had contact with the outside world. The Huaorani are very proud of their native roots, and refer to anyone else as non-human. They speak a language only understood and spoken by them, interestingly it does not have any similitude with another language spoken in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The Huaorani are admired for their hunting skills. They are also incredible warriors; throughout their existence they have faced countless battles with other indigenous groups of the region, and have always been victorious. The Huaorani culture is characterized by their complete reliance on the natural resources of their surroundings. Although there are very few Huaoranis who live like before (with little influence of outsiders) their survival depends on their immense knowledge of the fish, wildlife, and plant life of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Understanding the Huaoranis’ lifestyle and mind is a life changing experience for the few fortunate people who have been able to do this encounter in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
