Its name is Ormosia coccinea, but it is locally known as Huairuro. This red seed, normally with black spots, is the source of many believes and it is commonly used in Latin America.
Centuries ago, the ancestral cultures used to define the Huairuro as a protection seed and nowadays people still use it for that purpose. In many South America countries it is very common to find this tradition. In Ecuador, the seed of the Huairuro grows abundantly and it has been used especially in handcrafts. Although it looks like a small been, it is not eatable because depending on each person’s metabolism it can have poisonous effects and can also be hallucinogen.
In ancient times, this seed was used on important rituals and many healing and protective powers where attributed to it. It was used as an amulet and some people dared to consume it to avoid bad energies. At the present time it is mostly used on jewelry like earrings, bracelets or necklaces, but the imagination of artisans leads them to create other wonderful things as well. In Ecuador, it is very typical to put a Huairuro bracelet in the newly born to avoid “the evil eye”, that refers to the bad energy of other people or their negative thoughts.
Within the spiritual properties related to the Huairuro, there is fortune, good luck, braveness and even couple union. It is said that it should be taken inside the wallet to have call richness, on oneself if you want to change your luck or leave it in the house to avert bad energies.
The Huairuro comes from a big tree that can grow up to 30 meters high, has a kind of sheath where the Huairuro lies inside. The red seeds are always female and the black and red seeds are the males. It has been used since pre-Incan times and has not diminished until now. Its use is not limited to the Amazon region as this seed can be found in many crafts especially in Andean areas.
The Huairuro is not only pleasant because of its spiritual attributions; it is also a very beautiful seed that many people –mostly women- like to wear in their hands or necks.
