Ancient tribes believe that all things in this universe have a substantial spirit. According to them, Earth, water, plants and animals are different expressions of consciousness, in different realms or realities. All these elements in the universe are aware of their harmony with everything else, and they know how to surrender to each other. Several tribes in the Amazon Rainforest claim that our spirit can be fulfilled and nourished by learning about our own harmony with our universe brothers. These people have grown spiritually over time and deeply understood their nature through the extensive study and analysis of an enigmatic species behavior such as the Jaguar.
The Jaguar or American tiger (Panthera onca) is a carnivorous genus Panthera, also acknowledged as the largest cat and the only one of the four species found in America. The Jaguar has been honored in all major cultures and civilizations, mostly pre-Columbian cultures of America, which tended to deify the ‘Animals of Power’ that coexisted with them. There were four power animals for them: the snake, the butterfly, the quetzal and the Jaguar. The jaguar represented the ferocity and majesty, its image was related to a highly militaristic or war context. Warriors had to feel like a jaguars to overthrow all of their rivals. For certain cultures, Shaman were able to transform into a jaguar at night to destroy their enemies.
Ethnic symbolism of the American Tiger or Jaguar alternates within two scopes. In the first one, the jaguar is the guardian of earthly darkness, it is the keeper of earth’s maternal womb that provides new fruits and life. In the second phase, the Jaguar transforms at twilight into the underworld.
Another relevant aspect to consider is the intrinsic and deep relationship between this feline and the shaman. This person, through the use of hallucinogens and visions, is able to share his knowledge about the behavior of the jaguar with the rest of the tribe. For centuries, shamans have been responsible for keeping continuous contact with these species and learning from them as well as how to manage natural knowledge through inquiries received through visions or periodic trips to the jungle.
