In this globalized and hectic world, finding colorful and striking species such as monkeys, is not an easy task because every day there are fewer natural redoubts that man has not explored yet. However, the existence of vast forests and lush areas, such as the vibrant Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest, represents a fortress for the many wild species that inhabit throughout this territory.
The Spider Monkey also called Coatá, is a group of monkeys, characterized by its long limbs and amazing liveliness. The Spider Monkey’s brain is large and has some resemblance to the Old World apes. The body of this unique monkey is covered by a yellowish-gray, black or brown fur, which gets lighter in the underparts. Its eyes are rounded by a white ring that gives them an unusual and quite distinctive look.
The spider monkey diet consists mainly on wild, juicy and ripe fruits. It includes more than a half of the species of trees that live in the Amazon Rainforest. This animal is a sophisticated processing food machine that swallows a whole fruit in order to make it more digestible and then expels the seeds. The seeds come to the external world prepared to germinate because stomach acids soften the outer layer which sometimes can get very hard. Moreover, while passing through the large intestine they are soaked with substances that keep away insects that might prevent the seed from germinating successfully.
Although it seems very small and harmless, the Coatá is the most agile monkey of the new world due to its long and flexible tail which allows them to manipulate a wide range of objects from heavy branches to a small peas. Despite not being violent by nature, it has developed the art of defense to keep, itself and other Spider Monkeys, safe. Whenever the herd is threatened, they break branches and drop them from the top of the trees as projectiles towards the predators to make them go away.
In ancient times, these species used to be honored by Mesoamerican cultures in figures, totems and in Mayan art, they were presented playfully carrying most of the time cocoa pods to highlight their important role as food providers within the jungle.
Whether you want to visit the Amazon Rainforest for vacation or relaxation, from Advantage Ecuador, we highly recommend all nature lovers to visit the jungle and experience this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy the beauty and charisma of these unique creatures.
